Is Your Dog’s Scent-Marking a Tool for Communication

Reading your dog’s mind is little easy and what all you have to do is just an observation of your dog and its behaviour. A dog’s body language will reveal many things and for instance your dog will show his disapproval by snarling or even barking differently from its normal way of barking.Further, in addition to what you hear you can also see your dog expressing its mind by few other ways such as wagging it tails or growling.

There is one more marked way of scent marking by which your dog will try to establish its territory and dogs are known for its scent marking behaviour whenever it reaches a new place or other alien places. You can also see your own trained dog doing the scent marking if you happen to move to a new home and this will happen despite your dog’s proper potty training. It is your dog’s natural instinct to scent mark its new place so as to show the outer world its territory and to feel at home in its new place.

Any dog has got a very strong sense of smell and whenever your dog finds a place without its favorite mark of smell, then it will immediately mark the place with its own urine so as to gain control over the area and to feel comfortable.

Dogs normally carry out its scent marking act only with urination, but few dogs were also seen rubbing their bodies against furniture and other objects to leave some of their body odor on these objects for later identification. Though such type of acts also fall under the ambit of scent marking, most of the dogs prefer to scent mark their areas with urine probably for long lasting effect.

Whenever you watch your dog doing the act of scent marking, you will first observe your dog sniffing around the selected spot for a while and then urinate the spot with only little quantity of urine at a time. Once done, the scent marked area serves the purpose of indicating outer world the territory of the dog and all other dogs will be able to appreciate the territory scent marked by their other counterparts.

If you live in a place where there are many dogs outside, then you can watch your own dog doing the scent marking act very frequently and in many places and this is normal because on seeing so many dogs roaming in the area your dog will get more cautious to mark and protect its territory. You may have a secure compound or a fence that will prevent entry of other dogs into your garden or house, but your dog will continue to do the scent marking act only to caution other dogs that may venture to get inside your compound.
