Why
it is Dangerous to feed Your Pets with Recalled Pet Food
Having
discovered through the demise and disorders of many pets that
there was something wrong with the pet foods in the market,
Menu Foods recalled the largest dog and cat food in History
in March 16, 2007.Menu Foods manufacturers most brands of
dog and cat food, and use the same basic ingredients for these
products.
They found that a substance called melamine has contaminated
the wheat gluten in the pet foods. Menu Foods and the Food
and Drug Administration, through several studies, found that
melamine is the chief culprit in causing the dog and cat illness
and deaths.
Why
Melamine cause Food Recall
Melamine,
a chemical, is used in plastics and other products. During
the recall of cat and dog food, it was found, that wheat gluten
and other ingredients imported from China were contaminated
with this product. The Chinese seem to have added the melamine
to make it appear to have more protein.
Past
studies indicated the harmless nature of small amounts of
melamine in dogs, cats, humans and other mammals. But according
to the new research melamine causes crystal deposits in the
kidney leading to kidney failure. So soon after the death
of several pets after eating, the tainted food, the cat and
dog food recall was set in motion.
What
a pet owner can do
Most
of the pet owners are terribly concerned about the foods supplied
after the dog and cat food recall. They want to be sure that
the food given to their pets is free from any contamination.
Besides Food and Drug Administration offers advice regarding
dog and cat food recall. FDA website has a complete list of
recalled pet foods. Pet owners can consult the website for
information. The list is often updated as imported foods from
China are contaminated.
A
few pet owners are going in for home made pet foods but it
is doubtful if the pets get their normal nutrient requirements
through them. Many websites discuss home made pet food and
give recipes for different types of food. A positive result
of the dog and cat food recall is that all pet owners are
careful and concerned more about the diets of their pets.
They have become more serious and active in the well being
of their pets.
